Going to war with Iraq was sheer and utter folly. The Bush administration has made one of the largest mistakes in the history of the United States. Iraq did not threaten us, Iraq did not attack us. Iraq did not have any stockpile of WMD's as we were led to believe, nor did it have any working relationship with Al Qaeda. We (the U.S.) launched a pre-emptive war under the guise of being part of a "war on terror" and we have destroyed our credibility and the very stability that we claim we desire in the middle east. King George has no idea how to correct the disaster he has created and the American public is sick of this war. Everyone wants this to end, no one has a clue how to end it.
I personally support the idea of a "redeployment" of troops which basically means we have a nice orderly exit over a set period of time. We have to get out of there. We broke it and we can't fix it. The United States has the best military in the world but our soldiers can't fight people who blow themselves up. There is a myth being circulated that if we leave, the region will become unstable and that Iraq will become a training ground for Al Qaeda. I don't believe this for one second. The only reason Al Qaeda is in Iraq is to fight Americans. If we leave, the people of Iraq will hunt down and destroy these cowards far better than we can, because they will be relentless. The people of Iraq don't want the terrorists who have been blowing up their children and family members to set up shop in their country. If we leave, the Iraqi army will destroy these cowards, trust me. Yes, it will be ugly, but no uglier than the daily carnage we are seeing now, and at least it will get somewhere.
We need to take the fight back to Afghanistan. This all started because of 911 right? Bin Ladin? So why does he get a pass? Let's concentrate all of our efforts on getting to that border area and bringing the Taliban and Bin Ladin to justice. If this is a war on terror, then lets get the terrorists at hand and stop creating new ones by invading countries we have no business in. Dick Cheney is not someone who should be making decisions. His motivation for being in these countries and his overall wisdom are in serious question. He is itching to go to war with Iran too. More folly. Bad idea. I am pretty confident it can't be done politically or otherwise because we are bogged down in Iraq.
And while we are on the subject, many people are asking if Scooter Libby will be pardoned by King George. Of course he will, unless he gets a walk in the park punishment (like Sandy Burger did). Libby will never do hard time. Libby after all was the fall guy for Cheney. Joe Wilson dared to question the assertions being made by the Bush administration in order to justify an ill advised war that they decided to wage first, and find excuses for later. Mr. Wilson, and his wife had to be punished for it. We now know King George gave the order to release information to counter what Wilson said in his infamous New York Times Op Ed piece. Cheney then worked with Libby to release the hounds. Practically the entire press core was contacted with information about Wilson's wife, Plame. Armitage and Bob Novak get on the phone about it. Novak, more than happy to help the administration get revenge on Wilson, runs with the story and puts out his article. He checks with his buddy Karl Rove to verify the info first of course. Rove tells Novak, he had heard the same thing from members of the press! Novak even goes as far as to check Who's Who so his backside will be completely covered. Meanwhile back at the ranch, Libby is talking to everyone he can think of including Tim Russert? Well that depends on who you ask. Anyway, someone realized that since Plame is working for the CIA, the reckless release of her name could be a crime and warrants an investigation.
King George, pretending to be above the fray and claiming that anyone involved in a leak will be fired (yeah right), allows the appointing of a special prosecutor. During this investigation, it becomes clear to Patrick Fitzgerald that the Bush administration sought revenge on Mr. Wilson and did what they felt would cause the most damage to him. Fitz wants the big cheese, he wants the people who ordered the strike. Forget Armitage and Novak because they are just pawns. Was it Rove, Cheney, Bush? He was going to try and find out. He leans on Rove and Libby. Rove almost falls over, but cleans up his mess just enough to avoid charges. Libby makes a big mistake, he lies to a federal prosecutor in an attempt to protect his boss, the Vice President of the United States. You don't lie to a federal prosecutor (ask Martha Stewart). He is tried and found guilty. There is now an official stain on the tie of the Bush administration. Not to worry Scooter, Bush will pardon you if it comes to you doing any prison time. Just like past presidents including Ford and Clinton pardoned their friends, you will be pardoned too.
I mean, we can't have any pictures of a high ranking administration official in that tacky orange jumpsuit can we?
